Rachel Whiteread
Book Review

In winter season (2018), Platform 28 focused on the concept of “common space” and strategic ways to shed light on or activate them. Along many programs, we reviewed two books from our library on the British artist, Rachel Whiteread.

Rachel Whiteread creates spare, poetic sculptures that challenge perceptions of the commonplace. Working from everyday domestic items, she casts__in rubber, concrete, plaster and polyester resin__the negative spaces inside closets and underneath tables and chairs, sinks and bathtubs. Her take on the concept of “common” was central to our programs in winter of 2018.
